Of the 90ha of "La Tenuta di Colonna", 64ha are planted with vines. The vineyards are predominantly sloping and have well-drained limestone-clay soils. The plantings are at various heights on the hills from 100 to 300 metres above sea level.
The Pallavicini holdings in Colonna, are composed of three main sections: Colonna, Pasolina and Marmorelle.
The main cellars are situated at Colonna in 17th century building on Via Casilina. This same building also houses the bottling line, warehouse, offices and the restaurant "L'Osteria della Colonna".
Close by, the "Pasolina" holding is a spectacular mixture of olive groves and vineyards encircling a mediaeval tower, which offers views of the Eternal City. In this particular microclimate red grapes suitable for long-lived red wines are cultivated.
On these slopes the vines enjoy temperate winters and summers with large temperature differentials between night and day. This means that the grapes produced are healthy and can be harvested perfectly mature and full of flavour.
In the highest sections, on terraces cut out of layered volcanic rock, the terrain is well structured, of medium depth and has a high concentration of small volcanic pebbles. This makes it eminently suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc along with Cesanese and Petit Verdot. There is also a small amount of Malvasia Puntinata.
In the Marmorelle vineyards the heavier clay soils are of medium depth over a bedrock of limestone. This makes them perfectly adapted to the more aromatic varieties which are planted here: Falanghina, Greco and Malvasia Puntinata. Alongside these vines are also planted Trebbiano Toscano Malvasia di Candia, Bonvino, Grechetto and Chardonnay.
In the 1970's Sangiovese and Cesanese were planted here as well. Then in the 1990's the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted. We have been particularly pleased with Cabernet Sauvignon which in our Terroir has shown an ability to reach optimal ripeness without the "green" and "rustic" characteristics which can manifest themselves in this variety. Instead, wines of longevity and above all elegance are created.
